Derivable Queries (Hy11)

Last Updated:  1/17/13 9:14:12 PM 8373-8193-7062

The derivable query feature provides the ability to import another query from within your document into another query section.

Advantages of Derivable Queries:

  • Run faster than local results
  • Data always current
  • Can replace sub-queries, allowing LEFT JOINS, etc without breaking
  • Requires processing only the outer query itself to return the specified results
  • Can only be used if there are other query sections within the document that are connected to the same database
  • Embeds one select statement (the derivable query) into the FROM clause of another select statement (the “outer” query)

To use a derivable query*:

(*watch a video demonstrating these steps)

  1. From the main menu, click on Insert and select New Query.

  2. At the Insert Query window, click on OK to start query with the same connection.

  3. From the newly inserted query section, right click in the Elements window and select Derivable Queries to access the queries within the document sourced from the same connection.

  4. In the Elements window, click the "+" next to Derivable Queries to expand the selection.

  5. The query sections available as derivable will appear.

  6. The derivable query can then be joined to another query or another table from that same table catalog.
