Grouping Columns (Hy11)

Last Updated:  1/17/13 9:04:29 PM 8373-8193-7059

Grouping columns are a way of creating new data in your results set by grouping items into a new column. You can also use grouping columns to consolidate non-numeric data values into more general group values and map the group values to a new column in the data set.

In this example, a new grouping column will be used to consolidate the mail codes.

To create a grouping column*:

(watch a video demonstrating these steps)

  1. Open the DirectoryServices.bqy report located in the University Wide>Training folder.
  2. Click on Query from the Sections pane.
  3. Process the query. Search for Dept Id beginning with U.

  4. On the Results section, select the Mail Code column by clicking on the grey box above column header.

  5. From main menu bar, click on Results > Add Grouping Column.

  6. Click on New Group to create a grouping category.

  7. Type a name for the new column in the Column Name field. For this example, the first group is named "Group 1".

  8. Select appropriate values from the Available Values window and click on the right arrow to move and associate them with highlighted group.

  9. Continue to add new groups and associate all remaining values within the appropriate group. Click on OK.

  10. On the Results section, a new column will appear based on the grouping definition.

Also notice the new column is shown in italicized blue in the Data Layout.

Note: After processing the report, always review grouping column to check for new values not incorporated in defined groups.
