Data Functions (Hy11)

Last Updated:  1/17/13 9:02:33 PM 8373-8193-6944

Data functions can be used to compute aggregate values, including averages, maximums, counts and other statistics. Data functions can be used to summarize values, therefore the number of retrieved records are frequently reduced. The effects of data functions are most dramatic in the Query section.

In this example, a data function of Sum will be used to aggregate and summarize amounts.

Example of a data function*:

(*watch a video demonstrating a data function)

  1. This example uses the Transaction Summary table from the Financial data warehouse.

  2. After processing this query, notice that 7,713 records were retrieved as shown in the Results section.

  3. On the Pivot section, the total summation based on the 7,713 records retrieved are displayed.

  4. Back on the Query section, the Sum data function will be applied to the Amount$ field. This is accessed by right-clicking on the field from the Request Line.

  5. Once the function has been applied the field name has automatically been changed to Sum(Amount$). Process the query.

  6. After processing this query, notice that now only 24 records were retrieved instead of the 7,713 records initially.

  7. The total dollar amount of the summation of the Amount$ field are exactly the same when 7,713 records were retrieved.
