Computed Items (Hy11)

Computed items are custom columns where logic is used to create new values, modify existing items or create calculations. Computed items can be used for mathematical, conditional, numeric, data/time functions and string manipulation.

To create a computed item*:

(*watch a video demonstrating these steps)

  1. Open the DirectoryServices.bqy report located in the University Wide>Training folder.
     
  2. Click on Query from the Sections pane.
     
  3. Process the query. Search for Dept Id beginning with U0108.

     
  4. On the Results section, select the Results>Add Computed Item... from the main menu.

     
  5. On the Computed Item window, click on Functions to access the various function categories.

     
  6. There are several function categories available from the Results section. Of the various function categories available, for this example select String Functions.

     
  7. From the list of available functions, select Initcap. Once selected, a brief descripton of the selected function appears as well as appropriate related parameters. The Initcap function sets the first character in each word to uppercase and the rest to lowercase.

     
  8. To access and modify a field that is already present in the Results section, click on Reference... .

     
  9. From the list of available Items under the Request topic, select Asu_Campus_Affil.

     
  10. Notice the Expression box has been updated to reflect the selected item. Click on OK.

     
  11. The Definition window will now reflect the definition created for this computed item. Click on OK.

     
  12. On the Results section, a new column will appear which contains data based on the computed item's definition.

    Also notice the new column is shown in italicized blue in the Data Layout box. Any blue, italicized field in the Data Layout box represents a customized item.
