How to Access Secure Resources
SSLVPN is a secure remote network access point that allows you to connect to the ASU network from off campus. You can access secure resources, including Advantage, departmental services, your workstation, or other services outside of the Web by installing the SSLVPN client onto your machine.
Accessing an on-campus fileserver from off-campus
After SSLVPN is installed and connected, you are able to access resources from off-campus, including some fileservers. Before you can connect to a fileserver, you will need to know the server name and share name of your fileserver, along with the domain it is on. This information can be found by asking a member of the helpdesk of the department which supports the server.
Connecting from Windows
To connect to the fileserver from Windows, open the start menu and right-click on “My Computer” (Windows XP) or “Computer” (Windows Vista). Then select Map Network Drive.

In the next dialog box, enter in the server name and share, similar to the example. If the machine you are using is either your home machine, a laptop that is not joined to the domain, or if the server you are connecting to is on a different domain than the machine you are using, then you will need to connect using alternate credentials. Click the hyperlink that says “Connect using a different user name.”

In the Connect As… dialog box, enter in the credentials that you will be connecting as. You will need to enter the domain and your username in the format “domain\asuriteid”. In this example, the domain is asurite and the username is jhedrick . Afterwards, press OK, and then click Finish. If successful, a drive is mapped to the shared resource and will appear in My Computer.

Using Remote Desktop to access an on-campus machine from off-campus
Remote desktop allows you to access the desktop of a remote computer as if you were actually using it. With SSLVPN, remote desktop is also possible. You will need to know either the name or the IP address of the machine you want to connect to. If this is your first time connecting, the IP address is your safest bet for troubleshooting.
After SSLVPN is installed and connected, launch remote desktop. This can be done in the following ways.
Connecting from Windows
(Windows XP)
- Go to Start > Run… and type in “mstsc”.
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection.
(Windows Vista)
- Click on the Start button and in the text box, type in “Remote Desktop Connection”.
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection
- Press the Windows key and R at the same time to bring up the Run dialog box. Then type in “mstsc”
In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, type in the name or IP address of the machine you would like to connect to. After a connection is established to that machine, you will be prompted for your username and password.
