What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s basically a way to receive information from a central source without having to subscribe to emails, fill your inbox, or have your BlackBerry packed full of notes that you may or may not want to read. An RSS comes in what is called a Feed, and it can be obtained by what is called a Reader. You can use web-based readers or readers that you install on your computer or handheld device (BlackBerry or Windows Mobile smart phone, for example).
You enter a feed URL into a reader to get the reader to start downloading your feed information.
System Health comes complete with RSS feeds for the following subjects:
- Unplanned Outages – these are the messages that appear at the top of ASU Interactive. The feed location is http://syshealth.asu.edu/rss.xml
- Level messages for unplanned outages – This is broken down into Red, Yellow, and Green. Red will include Oxygen System outages (like Exchange, Interactive, and other Oxygen Systems). Yellow will include outages that impact slightly fewer customers, and green will include systems that impact very few (less than 500) people as well as System Health messages. Those feeds are located at:
- Red - http://syshealth.asu.edu/taxonomy/term/8/all/feed
- Yellow - http://syshealth.asu.edu/taxonomy/term/9/all/feed
- Green - http://syshealth.asu.edu/taxonomy/term/10/all/feed
- Advisory Notices – These are generally messages sent to or written for the ASU Community (email phishing advisories, etc). Other items like scheduled maintenance will also be posted here. The feed location http://syshealth.asu.edu/taxonomy/term/5/all/feed.
