Does ASU support 802.11n?

ASU’s Wireless service is dual radio 802.11ag. All 802.11n cards are compliant with the "g" radio and many are compliant with the "a" radio as well. This means that your 802.11n card will work at ASU, but won't be able to use "n" radio, except in buildings constructed after the end of 2008. ASU expects there to be hardware replacement of our Wireless APs before we can support 802.11n in all loccations.

Any wireless client card used on campus must support the 802.11ag standards. 802.11n is not currently supported on ASU's wireless network.

Status of 802.11n:

  • 802.11n is a currently a draft standard from the IEEE. The IEEE is expected to ratify the final 802.11n standard in December 2009.
  • 802.11n Draft 2 has received wide acceptance, and is being deployed as a better performing technology then 802.11abg.

Someone told me that ASU now requires the VPN client to be installed before wireless will work. Is this true?

VPN is not required to access ASU's wireless network, but it is recommended as it secures your connection.

I am having trouble loading coverage maps in Google Earth. Can you help?

You should delete everything you have saved in Google Earth--you shouldn’t have any of the campuses under “My Places.” When you click on one of the campus maps pages, the campus will already be expanded to look like this:

What does the Remember Me button do?

The Remember Me button registers the computer network address to the ASU wireless environment.  Authentication to the ASU wireless network will no longer be required if you register.  The next time the computer accesses the ASU network it is allowed directly in.

If you are not using your own personal computer, do NOT select the Remember Me button.

Student owned computers will automatically be unregistered to the ASU network at the end of the spring semester.  Registration is required for the next semester/year.

Faculty/staff machines will stay registered as long as they are recognized on the ASU network within 180 days.  All computers not seen on the ASU network for over 180 days will be removed and required the computer to be registered again.

How do system administrators register MAC addresses?

System administrators are able to register computer MAC addresses for the wireless environment using the Network Registration site. The site is to pre-register computers wireless network cards or to register devices that do not have a web browser application built-in.
